I think there’s a lot we can learn from a movie trailer. Though they’re only a couple minutes long, they pass along tons of information. While we’re watching a trailer, our mind is either registering all these bits of information in a good way or a bad way. Basically whether we want to see it or not. This, obviously, depends on the strength of the trailer. So, in light of this, I though I’d introduce this segment. Here, I’ll share some random thoughts while watching a movie trailer. Make sure to let me know your own random thoughts in the comments below!
‘If I Stay’
If I Stay is the hopelessly sentimental story of a young girl Mia with her whole future in front of her. She’s dating the cool kid from school, a prog-rock frontman, and is accepted to Juliard to play music. All is perfect, until a car accident alters her life and she must live between the place of life and death. If this movie sounds like The Lovely Bones to you, you’re not alone.
1. (00:16) Chloe Moretz’s boyfriend in the movie is wearing a Sonic Youth t-shirt. Okay, we get it. He’s cool.
2. (00:39) Mireille Enos plays the “if you can think of it, she’s already done it” kind of mom. Nice to see Linden is getting some work. Those who don’t understand that reference, shame on you!
3. (00:50) Meh, this is boring.
4. (00:55 Did you spot the “I [heart] Yo Yo Ma” sticker?
5. (01:15) Woah, this thing took a depressing turn.
6. (01:33) The sad music kicks in.
7. (1:46) Mirror image of Chloe Moretz. I hate that. It’s a lazy filmmaking technique.
8. (1:51) Linden has a nose ring, solidifying the notion that she’s the “cool” mom.
9. (2:05) My heart will go on!
10. (2:23) “Please stay.” No, please end.
There’s a lot we can learn from a trailer, as we see here. Mostly, though, we learned that this looks like standard sentimental fare. If you’re into that, this is for you. Otherwise, I think it’s safe to say that you can skip If I Stay.
