Remember that Zach Braff movie you helped fund on Kickstarter, well it’s finally finished. Wish I Was Here finally got a teaser and a release date. The trailer doesn’t give much story away, but it does reveal that this movie is the new top contender for the Most Indie Movie (a crown still held by Little Miss Sunshine despite some stiff competition).
Let’s break down a few of the ways Wish I Was Here will hit every indie chord it needs to (and which movies currently have the best example):
- Odd little kid wearing something odd because the adults in her life are incredibly supportive but also personal messes (Little Miss Sunshine)
- Slow motion walk (Wes Anderson’s filmography)
- Someone dies, but not before he or she is honored by an odd tribute or wish fulfillment, in this case involving steampunk goggles (Little Miss Sunshine, Hesher)
- Florescent lights (Safety Not Guaranteed)
- Supermarkets
- Someone getting punched in the face, or otherwise failing at a fight (Hesher)
- Waiting rooms (Garden State)
- Preferably with weird furniture
- Female characters wear glasess (Hesher)
- Josh Gad
- Kids more emotionally mature than the adults in their lives (The Way Way Back)
- Cubicles which look pathetic (see #4)
- And of course, The Shins
We’ll have to wait until July to find out if it can pull it all off.
